DESIREE SEGHERS

(Belgium)

Désirée Seghers was an active member of the Brussels Bar in Belgium from 1987 until 2015 when she moved to Jakarta with her family of six. She now is a Honorary Member of the Brussels Bar.

She started as a lawyer in corporate law with BAKER&MCKENZIE Int’l Law firm and in Intellectual Property law with ALLEN&OVERY Int’l Law firm, before making a radical swift to family law in 1996. Since then she is mainly active in family mediation, having followed her training with Diana Evers, mediation pioneer in Belgium. Since 1998 she is Deputy Magistrate with the court, “Justice of the Peace”, deciding on urgent and provisional matters in family crises. According to the European Resolution 2008/52/EC on Mediation, she is officially recognised as family mediator by the Belgian Federal Mediation Commission with retro-active effect to 2005.

From 2005 until her move to Jakarta, she was one of three legal counsels in the Staff Induction Office of the European Commission (DG1), providing legal, mediation and counselling services.

She has continued her training in coaching (ICF certified Solution Focused Coach) and in counselling (certified in Brief Therapy, school of Palo Alto), feeling the need, in family law and in people’s personal matters, to do more upstream work with her clients. This brought with it –as an educational tool- problem resolving technics within families and in situations of school bullying.

In 1984, she obtained Bachelor’s degree in Law with Cum Laude predicate from Saint Ignatius University Antwerp. A year later, she obtained Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, also with Cum Laude predicate from Saint Ignatius University Antwerp. In 1987, she obtained Master’s degree in Law with Cum Laude predicate from Catholic University Leuven. She obtained Post Graduate in Mediation from Catholic University Leuven in 2005 (in Dutch). In 2006, she obtained “University Certificate” in family mediation from Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve (in French).
